폴란드에서 할머니와 함께 살아가는 마리올라는 핸섬하고 다정 다감한 아더를 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 그는 친절하고 사려깊은 배려와 정성스러운 선물로 그녀를 감동시키곤 한다. 끝나지 않을 것 같은 그들의 달콤한 연애는 마리올라의 친구들의 부러움을 사고 가난하지만 성실하고 여린 그녀는 아더로 인해 삶의 기쁨을 맛본다.

 

어느 날 아더는 그녀에게 가까운 유럽의 몇 나라로의 여행을 제안하고 마리올라는 기쁜 마음으로 동행을 약속한다. 친구들에게 아더와의 여행계획을 자랑하며 행복해 하던 그녀는 드디어 그와 여행길에 오른다. 빌린 자동차로 여행을 떠난 그들은 첫날 날이 어두워지자 아더의 결혼한 친구네 집에 머물게 된다.

 

아이를 안고 나와 문을 열어준 친구의 아내라는 여자는 마리올라에게 알 수 없는 말을 건네고 그녀는 갑자기 불안한 마음에 휩싸인다. 그리고 그녀의 인생을 송두리째 뒤흔드는 엄청난 시련이 일어난다.

<저스틴>은 유럽의 주요 국제영화제에 출품되어 다수의 수상과 노미네이트를 기록한 화제작이다. 충격적인 소재와 뛰어난 영상미 그리고 배우들의 호연이 어우러져 만들어진 수작으로 평가받은 <저스틴>은 국내에서는 좀처럼 만날 수 없었던 폴란드 영화라는 점에서도 신선하다. 연출을 맡은 프란코 드 페나 감독은 시나리오 작가 출신답게 등장 인물들의 캐릭터와 섬세한 심리 묘사를 뛰어나게 보여준다. <저스틴> 또한 감독이 직접 시나리오를 쓰고 연출을 맡은 작품으로 동유럽 영화 특유의 드라이한 정서와 절제된 사실성이 돋보인다.

<저스틴>의 모티브는 우리 나라 영화 <나쁜 남자>와 많이 닮아 있다. 사랑이 전부라고 믿는 한 여자가 사랑하는 남자를 만나지만 그 사랑에 철저히 배신 당하고 유린당해 처절한 인생을 살아갈 수 밖에 없는 일련의 과정들을 담담하게 보여준다는 점에서 그렇다. 진실한 사랑이라는 것이 과연 있을까? 사랑의 과정은 그 사랑의 진실성을 보장해줄 수 있는 것인가? <저스틴>은 이런 종류의 질문을 끊임없이 관객들에게 던지면서 영화의 마지막까지 여운을 남긴다.

 

모든 것을 빼앗기고 인생의 밑바닥으로 버려진 여주인공 캐릭터를 완벽하게 보여준 안나 시에슬락의 연기력

 

<저스틴>에서의 뛰어난 연기로 일약 스타덤에 오른 여배우 안나 시에슬락은 모든 것을 빼앗기고 절망하며 점점 삶을 포기하는 여주인공 ‘마리올라’를 맡아 인상적인 호연을 펼쳤다. 처음에는 사랑에 빠져 행복에 겨운 순진한 처녀의 모습에서 집단 강간을 당한 후 절망하고 점점 매춘부로 전락하는 과정을 힘겹게 받아들이는 여주인공의 캐릭터를 완벽하게 연기해냈다는 평가를 받았다.

국내에서는 영화제에서나 만나 볼 수 있었던 동유럽권 영화들은 현실에 대한 사실적인 묘사와 탁월한 통찰력이 돋보이는 특징을 가지고 있다. 폴란드와 룩셈부르크 합작 영화인 <저스틴> 또한 이러한 동유럽권 영화의 장점을 고스란히 가지고 있다. 거기에 대사보다는 상황과 캐릭터들의 표정, 그리고 행동 양식으로 보여주는 심리 묘사가 뛰어난데 특히 아름다운 영상과 조화를 이뤄 독창적인 스타일을 만들어 내고 있다. 마치 연극의 세트와 같이 잘 계획된 조명을 통해 드라이한 감성과 잔혹한 현실의 모습을 적나라하게 보여주고 있다.
