브루스 윌리스가 형사로 등장하여 혼자서 테러범을 모두 해치우는, 지금에 와서는 평범하다고 할 수 있는 내용의 액션물이지만, 공감가면서 제대로 형상화 된 캐릭터, 배우들의 훌륭한 연기, 존 맥티어난 감독의 대단한 연출력 등으로 새로운 차원의 액션 영화를 완성시켰다는 평가를 받았다. 전 세계적인 흥행 성공작. 옥의 티. 환풍구를 통과할 때 편집이 잘못 되어 런닝 색깔이 하얀 색에서 검은 색으로 바뀌는 장면이 있다. 또 테러리스트들은 독일인으로 그려지고 있지만 그들이 구사하는 독일어 문법은 완벽하게 틀렸다. 독일 개봉판에서는 테러리스트들이 유럽에서 왔다고만 되어 있다.

교통시스템 마비로 터널이 차 안으로 꽉 막힌 상황, 신호체계가 무너져 차들은 서로를 향해 돌진한다. 두려움에 차를 빠져나간 천재해커 매튜 패럴의 뒤를 쫓는 존 맥클레인, 자동차 충돌 후 두 사람을 향해 전속력으로 날아오는 자동차 한 대, 그리고 양 옆으로 다가오는 두 대의 자동차, 피할 곳은 없다. 존 맥클레인 귀신 같은 본능으로 몸을 숙여 자동차 세 대의 작은 틈에 몸을 숨긴다. 이 장면을 컴퓨터 그래픽이 아닌 실제 차량을 이용해 촬영되었다. 물론 컴퓨터 그래픽도 사용되었다. 하지만 그것은 실제 촬영을 위한 테스트 시뮬레이션때문이었다. 몇 달간의 철저한 테스트 끝에, 몇 대의 차량을 대파한 끝에 이 엄청난 장면은 렌 와이즈먼 감독이 머리 속에서 그려낸 완벽한 카스턴트 장면이 완성되었다.

자동차로 헬기를 격추시킨다! 말도 안 되는 이 상황이 <다이하드4.0>에서 실제로 벌어진다. 테러리스트들은 존 맥클레인을 터널에 가둔 채 헬기로 공격을 감행한다. 절체 절명의 순간, 무조건 차를 몰고 터널 끝으로 질주하는 존 맥클레인, 차는 터널 기둥을 들이받고 하늘로 치솟아 총알 세례를 퍼붓던 헬기와 정면 충돌한다. 숨이 멈춰질 듯한 장면이 끝나자 “총알이 떨어져서”라며 특유의 유머를 날리는 존 맥클레인. 숨막히는 액션 후의 시원한 유머, 이것이야말로 <다이하드>를 사랑할 수 밖에 없는 진정한 이유이다. 자동차로 추격하는 헬기를 격추시키는 진정한 액션영웅의 정신을 발휘하는 <다이하드 4.0> 최고의 액션 명장면. 엄청난 가격의 헬기를 실제로 격추시킨 이 장면 촬영에 있어서 실수란 용납될 수 없었다. 무조건 한번에 완벽한 컷을 건져야만 했고, 스탭들은 같은 장소에서 2달 동안 꼬박 테스트를 했다. 결과는 화면에 보이는 대로 완벽하게 성공.

엘리베이터 통로에 낀 차 안에서의 치열한 격투
벽을 뚫고 엘리베이터 통로에 거꾸로 매달린 자동차, 아슬아슬하게 엘리베이터 줄에 의지한 자동차 안에서 치열하게 격투를 벌이는 존 맥클레인과 매기 큐, 움직일 때마다 차는 조금씩 내려가고, 두 사람을 목숨을 건 사투를 벌인다. 조금만 삐긋해도 수 십미터 아래로 추락하고 마는 긴장감 넘치는 순간, 존 맥클레인과 매기 큐는 이 순간에도 액션을 멈추지 않는다. 발 한번 뻗을 때마다, 손 한번 뻗을 때마다 자동차는 끼익 소리를 내며 아래로 점점 내려가기 시작하고, 액션은 손에 땀에 쥐게 할 만큼 생생하다. 액션연기라면 자신있던 매기 큐도 이런 위험한 장면 촬영은 난생 처음이었고, 처음으로 연기를 하면서 무서움을 느꼈다고 한다. 끝도 없어 보이는 수 십미터 엘리베이터 통로에서 벌이는 남녀간 일생일대의 대결, 그 동안 어느 영화에서도 이런 수준의 남녀 액션 대결은 없었다.

테러리스트의 엄청난 무기에 언제나 권총 하나로 버텨내던 존 맥클레인, 이번에도 무모한 대결은 계속된다. 존 맥클레인, 이번엔 F35 전투기를 고작 트럭 한 대로 버텨낸다. 존 맥클레인을 지원하기 위해 나선 F35 전투기, 하지만 테러리스트는 디지털 테러리스트 답게 전투기의 통신회선을 가로채 오히려 그를 공격하도록 지시한다. 아찔한 높이의 고가도로에서 대형트럭과 F35 전투기의 추격전이 시작된다. 전투기의 폭격에 고가도로는 서서히 무너지고 존 맥클레인이 탄 트럭은 간발의 차이로 위험을 벗어난다. 이어지는 전투기의 무차별 공격, 수 십 미터 상공의 고가도로 위에서 무기 하나 없는 트럭 속의 존 맥클레인, 역시 그만이 할 수 있는 기지로 전투기에 치명적인 피해를 입힌다. 사상 최초 대형 트럭과 F35 전투기의 추격전, 오직 <다이하드 4.0>에서만 가능한 일이다.

거미줄 없는 스파이더맨의 사실적인 부활
가브리엘의 부하 랜드는 빌딩에서 점프해 에어컨 유닛에 착지하고, 비상 계단으로 점프하여 탈출한 후, 다른 비상 계단으로 뛰어 내리고, 3번째 비상 계단으로 뛰어 내린다. 이 모든 것은 한번에 이뤄진 것으로 한번도 영화에서는 시도되지 않은 것이다. 초인캐릭터가 아닌 현실적인 액션캐릭터로서는 한번도 시도한 적 없는 장면으로 마치 거미줄 없이 건물과 건물사이를 뛰어다니는 스파이더맨에 비유할 수 있다.
